Disaffiliation of the Rewmi MP: The Majority Seeks its Camp

The departure of the MP for Rewmi from the Bby parliamentary group brings up the debate on the parliamentary majority held by the presidential camp. From an arithmetic point of view, Bby has only 82 deputies against 80 for Yewwi askan wi and Wallu combined, to which must be added the 3 non-registered deputies.

Since yesterday, the parliamentary group Benno bokk yakaar (Bby) is no longer in the majority within the Hemicycle from the point of view of the number of deputies. The presidential camp now has only 82 parliamentarians while the opposition groups Yewwi askan wi (Yaw) and Wallu together account for 80 representatives of the People to which must be added their 3 non-registered colleagues.

This new situation stems from the decision of Ms. Mariétou Dieng to leave the majority group to become a non-attached deputy, following the resignations of her leader, Idrissa Seck from the presidency of the Cese and the conference of leaders of Bby.  And, the already recorded departure of two of her party comrades and ministers in the government of PM Amadou Ba: Yankhoba Diattara (Sports) and Aly Saleh Diop (Livestock).

Presidential Election : Idy on Track

Le Quotidien already wrote in its edition of n°6050 dated Monday April 24, 2023, that this departure of the only deputy for Rewmi and member of the Bby group, if it were to be recorded, would not fail to have consequences at the level of the Hemicycle, even to the point of calling into question the existence of the parliamentary majority claimed by Bby.

A demand then reinforced by the alliance forged with Bokk gis-gis, the party of the former president of the Senate, Pape Diop, who had decided the day after the Legislative elections, to join the presidential camp in the National Assembly for the preservation of the peace and stability of the country.

The Wallu group arbiter?
Questions were also risen: around what number of deputies will the presidential majority be found in order to be able to pass government bills? Can the loss (?) of two deputies by the Yewwi askan wi group also constitute an advantage for Benno in the event of a new Yewwi-Wallu alliance in the National Assembly? Will Bby benefit from a tacit alliance with Wallu, underpinned by Karim Wade and Khalifa Sall’s future amnesty bill?

All these questions have their reason. But the fact remains that a « continued disagreement » between the parliamentary opposition groups, Yaw and Wallu, could greatly benefit the presidential camp at Soweto Square.

Call for Dialogue: Sall on Time

This would result in the smooth running of the current legislature. A legibility of the parliamentary game, in other words. Still, what would it take for the National Assembly to resume normal functioning before the end of the ordinary session opened since last October, so that we can make a good reading of the attitudes and other acts of the actors of this institution. The next few months in the Hemicycle are to be scrutinized with great attention.
